Part 15

Bas rushed the doctor toward his beloved. “Fix him.”

Dr. Joss Heath narrowed his eyes at Bas while he entered the room. “What happened?”

“He passed out. I don’t know what’s wrong. That’s what you’re for.”

The doctor kneeled beside Gus. “How old is he?”

“He’s newly born.” Bas hoped he hadn’t done anything wrong. He’d never dealt with a newly born before.

“No. I mean how old is he in human years. What age was he changed?”

“Seventy-five.” Bas knew Gus’ age to the minute.

The doctor lifted Gus’ eyelids and examined his pupils with a flashlight he pulled out of his pocket. “Why so late?”

“He had things to do,” Bas said.

“I’ve never heard of anyone over fifty being successfully transformed.” Joss said. He touched Gus throat and face. Bas barely restrained a growl. He didn’t like other people’s hands on his mate.

Fear formed a snowball of terror in his stomach. “What are you saying?”

“Most vampires are changed when they are young and virile. I’ve never seen anyone transformed so old.”

Bas growled. “He’s not old. He’s the perfect age. Now figure out what’s wrong and fix it. What are we paying you for?”

“You’re paying me to make sure none of your food passed out from blood loss and to fix any injuries.”

Bas lifted the doctor up by the back of his neck. “I’m certain I don’t need to tell you how important Gus is to me. If he dies I will kill you.”

“I-I can’t help him if you don’t put me down,” Joss stammered. The doctor was still human. Some humans earned their path to vampirehood by performing tasks to help out the good of the coven.

Spreading his fingers he dropped the doctor to the floor. “His life will determine your own.”

“He shouldn’t have survived,” Joss muttered.

“Why?”

“I’ve read a lot of studies about transformation and they all say people over fifty always die from the shock to their system. The oldest transformed vampire is sixty. Seventy-five is unheard of.”

“I can’t lose him.” Bas didn’t care what they had to do to bring Gus back but he would do it.

“How much did he eat?”

“One donor.”

“He needs much more. You of all people should know that.” Joss frowned at Bas.

“How could I know that? Everyone in my coven came fully changed. Gus is my first to initiate.”

Joss pulled a pocketknife out of his pocket and sliced his finger. He squeezed the cut until drops of blood dripped from it. He moved his finger until the blood fell upon Gus’ mouth. “Being turned this late and surviving probably. means he’s a stronger vampire than anyone knows.”

Gus’ eyes snapped open. His gaze unfocused he grabbed Joss’ arm and yanked him closer. “More,” he whimpered.

When Joss tried to take his hand back Gus growled. With unprecedented strength Gus flipped them over, pulling the doctor beneath him.

“Oh crap,” Bas said. For the first time he wondered if he could handle Gus after all.
